Why is your word count different from Word?

💡 What Word counts that your university doesn't

Word counts every word in the file by default. That includes the parts most universities tell you to leave out:

• References and bibliography — excluded at most universities
• Footnotes and endnotes — excluded at many institutions, though law and some humanities count them
• Figure captions and table content — often excluded
• Appendices — almost always excluded
• Running headers and footers — counted by Word, ignored by your marker
• In-text citations — usually counted, but a few departments strip them out

So the number Word gives you is usually well above the count you're meant to report — sometimes by a few hundred words, sometimes by a few thousand.
