PDF Word Count Checker

Open a PDF in your browser, see references, footnotes, tables, and headers separated out, and toggle off whatever your word count shouldn't include.

⚠️ Why a PDF count rarely matches the original

A PDF doesn't store your text as a clean document. It stores characters placed at coordinates on a page, with no real sense of what's body text and what isn't. So a plain word counter trips over the same things every time:

  • Tables: cell text gets jumbled with layout data, so numbers and labels are double-counted or misread.
  • Headers and footers: the chapter title, your name, and the page number repeat on every page and get added to the count again and again.
  • Figure captions: captions sit in their own text layer and usually aren't part of the body you're being marked on.
  • References: a bibliography can run to hundreds of words, and most UK universities exclude it from the limit.
  • Footnotes: the small print at the bottom of each page reads as part of the flow and gets counted by default.

🔍 What CountMyPaper does with the file

CountMyPaper reads the text out of your PDF in the browser, then sorts it into sections — body, references, footnotes, tables, headers, appendices — by matching the formatting patterns these sections usually follow.

From there you flip each section on or off until the total lines up with what your department actually counts. Everything stays highlighted, so you can see at a glance which paragraphs are in and which are out.

It all happens on your machine. The PDF never gets uploaded.

📋 Counting a PDF, step by step

  • Open CountMyPaper and click Upload Paper
  • Pick your PDF — it opens in the browser, nothing gets sent anywhere
  • Check the color-coded breakdown of sections it found
  • Switch off references, appendices, or footnotes, whatever your limit excludes
  • Read the body word count straight off the report panel

🔒 Nothing leaves your device

The text gets pulled out of your PDF by JavaScript running in your own browser. There's no upload, nothing is stored, and the file never touches a server. If you're working with an unpublished paper or a draft dissertation, that's the difference between a word count and handing a copy to someone else.
